Language in Pakistan


Urdu is the national language of Pakistan & has historical significance as language developed during Islamic conquests in the Subcontinent during the Mughal Empire. it was chosen as a neutral language to unite various groups of Pakistan. Urdu is closely related to Hindi but is written in an extended Arabic alphabet rather than in Devanagari. Urdu also has more loans from Arabic and Persian than Hindi has.

Language of government is English. Some educational institutes and universities use English. Many other languages are spoken in Pakistan including Punjabi, Siraiki, Sindhi, Pashtu, Balochi, Hindko, Brahui, Burushaski, Balti, Khawar, Gujrati. Pakistan has 1 million speakers of Dari. Arabic is popular due to religious significance. Persian is an important literary language in Pakistan.
